Jonathan Larson’s RENT paints a realistic portrait of the impoverished artist and queer communities of the 90’s in New York City. When costuming characters belonging to subculture, research was the most important in order to create looks that felt true and real. Taking inspiration from hardcore and grunge music scenes, club kids, drag queens, and NYC street photography, characters were costumed by building wardrobes of mainly pulled and thrifted garments to create realistic looks. The main goal for the costume design of this show was to make it feel like no costumes were being worn at all, and that the audience was just viewing people as they authentically were.
